The mentally handicapped are a forgotten group of people in this rural area and unfortunately many children will never be offered any form of education or professional help. Some live in appalling circumstances due to the taboos surrounding mentally handicapped people.
Luckily, some individuals and organisations are willing to address this situation. The idea is to set up small schools for an all round education and the teaching of life skills, matched to the ability of each individual. Other activities will be initiated on request of the local population, as long as they are in accordance with the aims and resources of SOK. There is a possibilty of esablishing joint projects with the Health Ministry and other NGO’s. For example, Operation Smile for operating on children with a cleft palate, Amref / Flying doctors with special school programmes, surgery days for hospital patients and Lions eye clinics.
